Obituary: Alice McLeary

Very sadly, Alice McLeary died in a road accident on 24 February 2003.

Alice joined the University at the beginning of 2001, as Learner Support Co-ordinator in the Disability Services Section of the Equality Unit.   She had previously worked for a number of educational establishments and other organisations in England and Scotland, in support of deaf and hearing-impaired school children and students.   Her appointment at Leeds enabled Alice to continue and develop this earlier work.   Highly capable, dedicated and enthusiastic, and very popular with colleagues and students alike, Alice was involved in a wide range of activities to maintain and enhance the University’s provision for deaf and hearing-impaired students.   Latterly, she had been playing a leading part in the development, in collaboration with colleagues in the Schools of Modern Languages and Education, of a training programme designed to tackle the shortage of British Sign Language/English interpreters.   Her colleagues are determined to complete Alice’s work as an enduring legacy of her time at Leeds.
