James Eells

Jim Eells, Honorary Visiting Fellow in the School of Mathematics since 1992, died on February 14th.

Jim Eells moved permanently from the USA to Europe in 1969 to take up a chair at Warwick, which he held until his retirement, coterminously, from 1986, with being the first Director of the Mathematics Section at the Trieste International Centre for Theoretical Physics.

Apart from his own very significant contributions to mathematics in the study of harmonic maps, geometric evolutions, geometric stochastic analysis, and the differential structure on path spaces he was a great inspirer of research students and other mathematicians.

He was a frequent visitor to Leeds, particularly on Differential Geometry Days; his enthusiasm for mathematics and life always to the fore.
