Wayne Harrison, DCR(R)

We are very sorry to let members know that Mr Wayne Harrison, retired Technician in the Radiation Protection Service, died on 8 March 2013.

Having studied for ‘A’ Levels at Bradford College of Technology and Art, Wayne became a Student Radiographer at the Leeds General Infirmary in 1976.  He successfully completed the Diploma of the College of Radiographers in 1979 and went on to hold appointments as Radiographer at hospitals in Hull and Leeds.  In something of a change of career direction, he next took up an appointment as a scientific officer at the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment, Aldermaston.  In 1985, he joined the University, initially as temporary Technician in the Radiation Protection Service, covering a period of maternity leave.  He subsequently transferred to a technical post in the School of Materials, where he was involved in metallography and x-ray crystallography.  Wayne particularly enjoyed the opportunities this appointment afforded him to engage with students, whom he instructed in the use of a variety of equipment.

At the beginning on 1991, Wayne was attracted back to the Radiation Protection Service, where he was to spend the remainder of his career.  His work was central to the effective implementation of radiation protection systems within the University, including securing compliance with the strict legal requirements governing this area.  Highly capable and conscientious, Wayne developed close working links with many parts of the institution.  He was also a mine of information about the development of the safety services; it was to him that others would regularly turn if they wished to find out about past events or people.  Friendly and gregarious, Wayne was a very popular and respected colleague.  Away from the University, he had a strong interest in genealogy, tracing his family tree back to the early 1800s, and an equal passion for science fiction.

Wayne left the University at the end of 2009.

The funeral service will take place at 11.30am on Thursday, 28th March 2013, at Nab Wood Crematorium, Shipley. The flag on the Parkinson Building will be flown at half-mast on that day, in Wayne’s memory.
