Welcome The Department of Linguistics and Phonetics, part of the School of Modern Languages and Cultures, currently has three senior lecturers and three lecturers, with research and teaching expertise in many areas of linguistics and phonetics. All colleagues are active researchers in their specialist fields and were included in the national Research Assessment Exercise in 2008, which judged most of our research output to be of 'international excellence'. With a student satisfaction rating of 84% in the last National Student Survey, the indicators show that the Department is academically successful and an excellent learning environment. We currently have approximately 185 students: some 150 undergraduates and 35 postgraduates. We offer a range of degree programmes, including BA Single Honours Linguistics and Phonetics, BA Joint Honours with Linguistics and Phonetics, several taught MA programmes and several research degree programmes. Following a £350,000 refurbishment in 2004, we now offer state-of-the-art facilities for teaching and research, including a new phonetics laboratory, new teaching rooms, and a comfortable social space for students and staff. The Faculty of Arts received further funding of £450,000 in order to build a new Human Communications Laboratory. This was completed in early 2007 and is now up and running alongside the other departmental facilities.
