Research-based learning

We are a member of the Russell Group of research-intensive universities. Whichever subject you choose to study, research will be at the heart of your learning and you’ll be close to breakthroughs that are having a real impact in the world. You’ll be learning about discoveries as they are happening – sometimes even before they’ve been published.

Our approach to learning and teaching focuses on developing your knowledge and skills, as well as encouraging independent critical thinking and analysis. You’ll learn how to define problems and know what questions to ask – skills highly valued by graduate employers.

In the most recent National Student Survey, 89% of final year Leeds students said they were either satisfied or very satisfied with the overall quality of their course.

We recognise that studying at university may be very different from what you’ve been used to, which is why we have support services to guide you through this transition and help you adjust to university life.

How will you learn?

Our approach to teaching is designed to encourage you to be a confident, independent and self-motivated learner.

Exactly how you are taught will depend on your course, but it will be through a combination of lectures, seminars and tutorials, with additional time allocated to private study, project work, laboratory practicals and fieldwork.

There are lots of opportunities for you to work alongside our academics and get involved in the research happening on campus, so you’ll experience first-hand how knowledge is created. Research placements may be available right from the start of your course and you’ll also be able to undertake a research project in your final year, giving you a chance to make your own discoveries.

Discovery modules

To help you take advantage of the vast expertise available at Leeds, many of our courses offer discovery modules, previously known as electives. They give you the opportunity to develop your knowledge of a particular subject, or you can choose something completely new and unrelated to your course. We offer hundreds of discovery modules that are grouped into 10 Discovery Themes

Personal tutoring

From the moment you arrive a personal tutor will support your academic and personal development to help you get the most out of your time at Leeds.

Regular and structured meetings will aid you not only to do well in your degree, but also to become a more confident, articulate and highly employable graduate.

Through the Leeds for Life initiative you can reflect and record your academic and personal development.


You can develop your academic skills through Skills@Library. The workshop programme includes topics such as 'developing a balanced argument' and 'how to improve your presentation skills', or you can use the online resources to work through tutorials at a time and pace which suits you. If you need one-to-one support you can get further help with maths or general academic skills at a drop-in session.
