Appointment of lay members of the University Council

Date

The University Council is seeking to appoint several high-calibre individuals with broad leadership qualities, who can add value to its work as the University’s governing body.

The Council is chaired by Alastair Da Costa and has 23 members. The majority of these are lay (neither staff nor students of the University) and it is now seeking to appoint more lay members.

It is committed to upholding the highest standards of corporate governance and has a commitment to meet the obligations placed on the University as a charity, and as a body in receipt of public funds. It also has a collective responsibility to promote the University's wellbeing and to ensure its sustainability.

We are looking for talented and committed individuals who share the University’s ambitions and values and can make a significant contribution to ensuring our continued success.”

Jennifer Sewel, University Secretary and Registrar

The University Council’s specific responsibilities include:

  • corporate strategy, plans and budgets
  • corporate policy and major business decisions
  • establishing the framework for governance and management
  • monitoring institutional and executive performance

Speaking about the appointments, University Secretary and Registrar Jennifer Sewel said: “We are looking for talented and committed individuals who share the University’s ambitions and values and can make a significant contribution to ensuring our continued success. Whilst many Council members are resident in the Leeds region, this is not a prerequisite.

“We are proud to be a multicultural community and value diversity. We welcome applications from all sections of society, and especially from individuals from under-represented groups.”

The expected commitment is around ten days per year for an initial three-year period. Although not remunerated, all reasonable expenses will be paid.

The Council fulfils its responsibilities through a number of Council committees including the Audit and Risk Committee, Strategy and Investment Committee, Nominating and Governance Committee, Health, Safety and Wellbeing Committee, Remuneration Committee and Ethics and Values Committee.
