Talking about
Postgraduate pre-sessional English

I am interested in political science and national policy implications, so I chose to apply for the University of Leeds to pursue further and deeper study.

Studying the pre-sessional

On the pre-sessional course, I enjoyed the fact that the teachers were able to give me advice based on my questions and that they always created a safe atmosphere in the classroom to encourage discussion.

What I enjoy most is meeting new people and learning about different cultures at Leeds. When I first arrived in UK, I was afraid to communicate with locals because I don’t speak the language well enough. In the class, I was able to practice and gain confidence.

Developing new skills

The pre-sessional courses taught me how to effectively read the literature, how to write essays, the grading criteria for the degree course and academic integrity. It helped me get over the fear of the unknown and enjoy the learning process.

Adapting to study in the UK

There are some differences in the teaching methods and performance assessment between China and UK. Studying the language course is a wise choice to help international students to be able to adapt to the degree courses. Not only students can improve English, but [they] also can learn how to deal with the reading materials and how to write essays.

Haokun studied the Language for Politics and Society pre-sessional course, and is studying MSc Political Science.
