How virtual, augmented and extended reality can be used to overcome the challenges faced in healthcare following the pandemic.

The Three Principles for Progress report is a collaboration lead by the Centre for Immersive Technologies and the NHS HEE Technology and Enhanced Learning Team that brings together academics and world leaders to lay out how virtual, augmented and extended reality can be used to overcome the challenges faced in healthcare following the pandemic.

These principles are set out to ensure the efficient and effective use of immersive in healthcare.

Principle 1: Design and development should be driven by learning needs and feature requirements, not by marketing decisions.

Principle 2: Implementation must go hand-in-hand with rigorous evaluation and demonstration of translation of learning from simulation to the real world.

Principle 3: A culture of collaboration should be fostered to ensure efficient and effective use of immersive technology, through allowing multicentred, cloud-based investigation to run alongside precise, randomised and anonymised data collection and evaluation.

This report, as an output of the collaboration, hopes to promote a cultural shift towards collaboration through immersive technology, promoting inclusive teaching tools to drive social change and benefit the healthcare community and patient care.
