Frank Finlay has been Professor of German at the University of Leeds since 1999. He is recognised as a distinguished scholar in his field, with research and teaching interests in contemporary drama and fiction in its socio-political context and the role of the writer as public intellectual.

He has held senior roles in professional associations and has occupied a number of leadership positions at the University of Leeds for well over a decade, and began a new role as the University's Dean of Cultural Engagement in January 2020.

Frank was instrumental in the development of the Cultural Institute, which he set up to promote collaborations between academics, students and the arts and culture and creative industries sectors. He is also on the board of trustees for Leeds 2023, VaCO, Skipton Music and chairs the board for The Tetley.
