Talking about
Life as an undergraduate student at Leeds and the opportunities that support personal growth and development.

The course excited me

I chose my course because I have a long-standing passion for literature. The opportunity to engage with literature from across history and the world on a deeper level excited me. When I saw that Leeds also offered a combined Literature and Creative Writing course which would allow me to create my own work, I was convinced I wanted to study here.

One of my favourite aspects of my course has been the creative writing workshops, where my peers and I read each other’s work and offer constructive feedback. It has been great to have my work read by others, and I have particularly enjoyed feeling like I am part of a strong community of other young writers.

My academic skills have grown massively, and studying literature at this level has also allowed me to explore vast social and political issues and theories.

I feel supported by the staff at Leeds

I regularly make use of my tutors’ office hours to ask them questions about modules and assignments. In my second year, I felt quite disappointed with my grades, so I reached out to my personal tutor, who was very helpful and made me feel heard. His advice helped me get back on track and I started enjoying the course again. This support helped me to do much better academically.

There are lots of study spaces on campus

I really like the University campus. The blend of green spaces, old architecture and modern facilities on our campus makes it a great place to study. My favourite study spots are Edward Boyle Library as it feels chilled and social, and the Brotherton Library as it is a lovely building and is a good space to focus when I have deadlines looming. I also really enjoy borrowing physical copies of books from the library for my assignments.

Leeds is a very student-focused city

Students are never short of things to do in Leeds. While I used to go out in the city in my first year, now, my socialising is generally closer to home in Hyde Park and Headingley, both are great and full of students.

I lived in student accommodation in my first year, which was comfortable and convenient, especially as it was on campus. Since then, I have lived in shared houses in Hyde Park and Headingley with my friends. Living with friends has been an amazing experience and has been my favourite part of university.

My placement year gave me real experience and confidence

I am currently nearing the end of my work placement year in the Educational Engagement department at the University of Leeds, supporting students from underrepresented backgrounds at the University. I’ve travelled to schools and events in other cities to talk to prospective students, worked on interesting widening participation projects, met other amazing professionals and gained valuable experience.

After university, I hope to secure a graduate job, potentially in the Civil Service. Studying here, completing my placement year, and spending four years with a vast variety of new people have massively increased my interpersonal and professional skills, and I will leave Leeds feeling very confident and excited for my future.
