Moving from to Leeds from Indonesia and gaining professional experience as a Masters and PhD student.

Research is at the heart of Leeds

I chose to study at the University of Leeds because it has a focus on research and produces high-quality research papers. There are great research facilities, like The Astbury Centre for Structural Molecular Biology, that support the research happening across the University.

Careers support shaped my future

The University offers a lot of support to increase employability. The Careers Centre helped me with mock interviews, CV checks and they helped me to land my placement in my third year. The School of Chemistry has great links with industry, which provides more opportunities.

Opportunities outside the classroom helped me build my confidence

Outside my course, I joined in activities that helped me develop both technical and transferable skills.

These experiences helped me to grow my confidence and independence which are essential to being a great researcher.

I was a member of Enactus, a student-led group that creates sustainable enterprises to make a difference in the community. I was also in the Intercultural Ambassadors programme, where we ran an event for International Women’s Day and developed our teamwork and planning skills along the way.

I was also a Course Rep which gave me the chance to improve the learning experience of other students.

I feel like these experiences helped me earn the Salter’s Insitute Graduate Awards in 2023, where I was selected as one of the top chemistry and chemical engineering graduates.

Work experience opportunities brought my studies to life

In my third year, I did a placement at the Centre for Process Innovation (CPI), working in the Formulations Business Unit under the Automation and Digital team.

In my final year, I carried out a research project in a similar area and served as a Student Project Assistant at the Leeds Institute of Teaching Excellence, where I helped deliver research related to student education and experience.

Both roles were challenging but made my university experience even more rewarding.

It’s easy to live in Leeds

In my first two years, I lived in private student accommodation in Lovell Park. I chose to live there because the rent was cheaper and it was only a five-minute walk to Morrisons, which made food shopping a breeze. It’s also just a 20-minute walk to campus, so I stayed active and enjoyed the fresh air every day.

There’s always something new to discover

Leeds is a vibrant city with lots to do and I enjoyed exploring Leeds with my friends.

The food scene is amazing, with Chinese, Thai, Italian and more. I often shop at the Asian supermarket, as their range of ingredients makes it easier to cook food from home.

Kirkgate Market is one of my favourite spots in the city, as you get to try a variety of cuisines at a great price. I also enjoy being around Leeds Dock, especially on weekends. Events like Leeds Light Night and the Christmas Market are amazing to enjoy with friends.

The University has a diverse student community and I love the city and friends I’ve made here.
