Talking about
How combining scholarships helped her to focus her energy on her Masters study.

As a dietitian and nutritionist, Ada, an international student from Turkey, has always been motivated to improve public health and make a meaningful difference in people's lives.

Thanks to the scholarships I received, I didn't have to worry about taking on a side job, so I could really put all my energy into nutrition.

Scholarships were a huge relief

The University’s reputation caught Ada’s attention. She explained, “Although the international tuition fees made me hesitate at first, the university and School of Food Science’s global success ultimately motivated me for the future.”

Ada received two scholarships from the University: the International Masters Regional Scholarship, which is available to students from selected countries, and the International Excellence Scholarship, which deducted amounts from her tuition fees.

“Receiving these scholarships was a huge relief and a great moment for me, especially considering the rising exchange rates in Turkey. Without this funding, covering the full cost of education would have been financially and mentally challenging for my family and me.”

Preparing for employment

During her degree, Ada participated in the Global Industry Programme, an industry consulting experience for taught postgraduate students, working with real clients, developing skills to prepare students for future employment. She said, “It gave me practical experience of how things work here professionally and really helped me understand the UK work culture. For me, it was a nice mix of solid academic focus and hands-on experience.”

Towards the end of her degree, she worked as a Student Ambassador. She said, “It helped me come out of my shell, build confidence, and talk to all kinds of people.”

Make the most of the support

“I see education as an investment in the future. My advice would be to apply for any scholarships the University offers; don't just assume you won't get them. Also, there are so many student discounts available, like grocery memberships, cafés, restaurants, and even electronics, which are great ways to save money even if you don't have an income.”

“On top of that, I had friends who worked part-time in cafés or restaurants while studying, so it's definitely possible to balance work and school.”
