My foundation year gave me a brilliant advantage
I came to Leeds to study the International Foundation Programme before studying International Business and Finance. My foundation year prepared me for my degree, and I learnt things I didn’t learn at school, like referencing and writing reports. The year gave me a brilliant advantage as I was introduced to many of the topics I’d be covering in my degree.
The triple-accredited Leeds University Business School and the University’s global ranking led me to choosing Leeds. Throughout my degree, I took part in many opportunities such as trading simulations and pitching a business idea to industry experts, which prepared me for the real world.
Leeds uncovered my love for cultures
When I arrived in Leeds, I was nervous about making friends. However, I met some great people from all over the world and from different cultures, as well as people from the same background as me. I met like-minded people through initiatives set up for international students, so it wasn’t hard at all to make friends.
I was initially worried about the language barrier as English isn’t my first language, but meeting other international students helped as we practised English together. Interacting with such diverse groups of people at Leeds helped me to discover my love for learning about other cultures, which I was then able to explore in my dissertation.
Everyone was so welcoming and supportive
I’ve always felt safe in Leeds. I chose to live in accommodation close to campus and the University security office, which gave me an extra sense of safety. During my time here, everyone I’ve met has been welcoming and helpful. I’m really happy I chose to study here.
My academic personal tutor supported me throughout my studies. From listening to my thoughts and ideas around my studies, to finding part-time jobs and connecting with student life by joining societies, she guided and helped me through everything, both academic and personal, and I’m still in touch with her now.
I engaged with the Careers Service a lot. They helped with everything from writing CVs and cover letters to applications and interview support. I applied for an internship at the University and had to do a group interview, which I hadn’t done before. The Careers Service helped me to prepare by explaining the whole process and asking me interview questions so I could feel confident going into it. I got the job and am grateful to the team for all their support.
Leeds helped me explore new passions
I had several jobs as a student, working as an ambassador for Leeds University Business School, in the international office, taking on summer internships and being a Sustainability Architect in the Sustainability Service.
Seeing and being involved in all the University’s work around sustainability inspired a passion for sustainability and led me to apply for a Masters in Climate Change Finance and Investment at University of Edinburgh, which I plan to begin soon.
