My volunteering activity
I volunteered at the Faculty of Biological Sciences MSc Careers Symposium, giving a presentation to current students about my own career trajectory since I completed my MSc. We discussed my current research as a postdoctoral researcher, how I found my passion and research niche, why I chose to undertake a PhD and stay in academic research afterwards, my tips for finding next steps, and my advice for sought-after skills to develop further while studying at Leeds.
I found the entire experience incredibly fulfilling because I knew I was providing useful information to soon-to-be Masters graduates who may have been feeling apprehensive about their next steps. I was very impressed by the passion from the students in the audience, who asked me many profound and thoughtful questions which generated brilliant discussion.
Why I became a Leeds volunteer
I chose to volunteer at Leeds to give something back to the University. Leeds provided me with so many opportunities for personal and professional development and without it, there is no doubt in my mind that I would not be where I am today.
My advice to anyone thinking about volunteering at Leeds
I would say to absolutely give it a go! Volunteering at Leeds is genuinely fulfilling and rewarding, alongside the professional skills gained in presenting to a student audience. You may who spark inspiration in a student, and facilitate their pursuit of a dream career.
