My role
I am the Programme Leader for the Preparation to Higher Education (PHE) programme at the Lifelong Learning Centre (LLC). I oversee the delivery of the programme and teach a range of modules.
I am the personal tutor for all students enrolled on PHE and work closely with them to ensure they fulfil their potential, get the support they need and develop the academic skills required to progress onto their chosen undergraduate degree programme at Leeds.
I am closely involved with recruitment and admissions to PHE. I work closely with my colleagues in the LLC’s Communities and Partnerships team to deliver pre-entry outreach and taster sessions, support potential applicants to apply and conduct their interviews.
Professional experience
I have a background in community work and adult education. I’ve worked at the LLC for over ten years, teaching on both our Child and Family Studies BA and Professional Studies BA. I’ve worked for a range of voluntary sector organisations across Leeds in a number of roles, from youth work to teaching English as an additional language.
I have a BA in Economic and Social History, an MA in Social and Public Policy and a PGCE in Post-Compulsory Education.
I have a keen interest in widening participation and making higher education accessible, enjoyable and inclusive for all. I am concerned with all forms of social inequality and am privileged to be in a role where I can teach on related topics and attempt to address some of the underlying causes.
I am especially interested in misinformation, fake news and the spread of conspiracy theories, and in exploring the role adult education has to play in responding to these issues.
