Sami Kerr

Sami, an international student from Canada, completed a year abroad at Leeds during her undergraduate degree and chose to return to the University to undertake her Masters.

I had already built a strong academic foundation, a supportive community, and a sense of belonging here. Coming back allowed me to expand my interests while benefiting from the University’s careers support and industry connections.

Alleviating financial worries with funding

After her year abroad, Sam discovered that year abroad students were eligible for the Alumni Discount.

“It was a huge factor that made me want to come back to postgraduate study at the University of Leeds.”

In addition to the Alumni Discount, Sami received the University of Leeds Masters International Excellence Scholarship. “It helped alleviate some worries about finances and showed me the University’s commitment to recognising potential and helping support student success.”

Sami also took out a loan through the Canadian Government to cover her remaining tuition and maintenance fees. She worked part-time jobs throughout university, including as an events intern, a lifeguard, a hospitality professional, and a student ambassador.

“Leeds has lots of opportunities for students to work part-time. I would highly encourage it as it has created a lot of transferable skills that helped me get a full-time job post-Masters.”

Building a career

As part of her undergraduate year abroad at Leeds, she took modules in business. She said, “I saw how in-depth the modules were. I am passionate about understanding how companies operate across borders and adapt to different cultural environments. A course that encourages global collaboration was a perfect fit for my interests and long-term career goals.”

During her Masters, Leeds supported Sami’s professional development. She explained, “Studying at a top Russell Group University has helped me get a full-time postgraduate job in London. I found the job posting through the Careers Service and attended their support sessions, including an in-person mock assessment centre.”

“There has been a huge opportunity for growth while I have been studying here. The lecturers care about their students and constantly check to make sure you understand the content and follow along. I have made a lot of friends and our department organised many social events for us to take part in.”
