Professor Simone Buitendijk, Vice-Chancellor and President at the University of Leeds, will help set the future path for higher education following her appointment to an influential body.
The International Higher Education Commission (IHEC) aims to redefine the strategic framework for UK higher education and establish a clear narrative around the social, cultural and economic benefits of international students.
As a Commissioner, Professor Buitendijk will help to develop recommendations for a new ‘International Education Strategy 2.0’ in partnership with the higher education community. An interim report was published in May 2023.
The first International Education Strategy was launched by former Universities Minister Chris Skidmore MP in 2019. The IHEC is now revisiting that framework to establish how international students influence the learning experiences of domestic students, their pivotal role in international research and the role of universities in fostering global connections.
We are proud to play our role in educating the next generation of global students.”
Professor Simone Buitendijk, Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Leeds, said: "It is an honour to join IHEC colleagues from across the political and higher education communities. Together, our aim is to develop a new and re-energised strategy fit for the future.
“International students bring so many social and cultural benefits during their time studying with us. In many cases, these relationships lead to long-term connections. We are proud to play our role in educating the next generation of global students.”
The University of Leeds is co-founder of the Knowledge Equity Network, a ground-breaking platform designed to encourage closer academic education and research collaboration on a global level. The Network seeks to share human knowledge more equitably to meet and solve our planet’s biggest challenges, from famine and poverty to gender inequality and climate change.
