The system of childcare provision in West Yorkshire: multidisciplinary insights for strategy and policy

Position
Policy project

Conversations around West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA)’s economic strategy highlighted a need to better understand the system of childcare provision in West Yorkshire. It is understood that a well-functioning childcare provision supports local families whilst also boosting the local economy.

This cross-disciplinary project investigated the barriers facing childcare across West Yorkshire and explored the extent of WYCA’s policy influence and its ability to improve childcare outcomes in the area.

The project intended to improve WYCA’s economic strategy and approach to childcare policy. By optimising the University of Leeds’ vast research expertise and evidence-base, the findings hope to improve childcare provision in the region.

A key output from the project was a research report co-produced with, and for, WYCA that received recognition by the Mayor of West Yorkshire, Tracy Brabin.

The project was funded by the 2023–2024 Research England Policy Support Fund.
