What are the Entry Requirements?

You can read the entry requirements for our English Language courses below and find information about how long you may need to study on a Language Centre course. Please note that your English language qualification should be no more than two years old at the start of your Language Centre programme.

Progression to degree programmes at the University of Leeds 

If you are applying for a pre-sessional course and intending to progress to a degree programme, you need to choose the right length of course based on your current language level, and the level you need to achieve. Please note that an Academic IELTS should be taken. Please use the tables below as a guide.

For postgraduate study

Summer pre-sessionals (July to September) for postgraduate courses: please click here to expand the table

For summer pre-sessionals progressing to standard taught postgraduate and research programmes starting in 2018-19. You can also download this table here. 

IELTS score needed for your University of Leeds degree programme: If your current IELTS score is at least: Minimum length of language centre course you should study:
 6.0 5.5 (no scores below 5.0. One score other than writing below 5.5 allowed)  10 weeks
 6.0 5.5 (no scores below 5.5)   6 weeks*
 6.5 6.0 (two scores below 6.0 allowed. No scores below 5.5)  10 weeks
 6.5 6.0 (one or no scores below 6.0 allowed. No scores below 5.5)  6 weeks
 7.0 6.5 (two scores below 6.5 allowed. No scores below 6.0)  10 weeks
 7.0 6.5 (one or no scores below 6.5. No score below 6.0)

*The Language Centre always recommends taking (at least) a 10 week course, even if you meet the English Language requirements for your course, as you will improve your academic English and study skills, and further your knowledge of UK study conventions before staring your degree programme.

Please note requirements are indicative and are intended as a guide - individual decisions will be made by the admissions tutor. Courses are available for longer periods, and during the academic year. For students who wish to study during the academic year, or who need to study at the Language Centre for longer to meet the requirements of your course, please see the 'Academic Year' table below. Courses are also available for longer periods. If you will need to study at the Language Centre for longer to meet the requirements for your course, please contact us for further details on langc@leeds.ac.uk. If your current IELTS score is at least: Minimum length of Language Centre course you should study:
5.5 Unconditional offer holders to IFY only 6 weeks*
5.5 5.0 (Two scores below 5.0. None below 4.5) 10 weeks
5.5 4.5 (Two scores below 4.5. None below 4.0) 20 weeks
5.5 4.0 (No scores below 4.0) 30 - 40 weeks**
IELTS score needed for Arts and Business Programmes If your current IELTS score is at least: Minimum length of Language Centre course you should study:
6.0  Unconditional offer holders to IFY only 6 weeks*
6.0 5.5 (Two scores below 5.5. None below 5.0) 10 weeks
6.0  5.0 (Two scores below 5.0. None below 4.5) 20 weeks
6.0 4.5 (Two scores below 4.5. None below 4.0) 30 - 40 weeks**

*6-week courses only available during summer. ** The Language Centre recommends a longer 40 week period of study for applicants who have IELTS scores substantially below the English Language requirement for the International Foundation Year.

Academic English for Undergraduate Studies

Terms 1 and 2 (October - March): IELTS 3.5

Terms 3 and 4 (April – September): IELTS 4.0
