Relocating to work at the University

If you’re applying for a job at the University of Leeds from outside the UK this page has some key things you should consider.
We also have a couple of handy checklists you can use – one to check before you leave for the UK, and another for after you arrive.
Visas and immigration
The UK Government’s Visas and Immigration website should have all the up-to-date information you need. You may also want to check whether you need to pay an immigration health surcharge and whether there are any legal requirements for family entering the UK.
Relocation expenses
Successful applicants may be eligible for the following financial help towards moving to the UK:
Visas and immigration
We can reimburse you for the cost of a standard visa application and the related Immigration Health Surcharge, if you are coming to the UK under one of the following routes (and don’t have any other funding to cover the cost of your visa):
- Skilled Worker - initial and extension
- Global Talent, if the visa was obtained to start/continue to work at the University of Leeds - initial (including endorsement and visa) and extension
- Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) in the UK.
If you need financial help with other costs relating to immigration, such as dependant visas/settlement, UK ECCTIS fees or travel to/cost of a UKVCAS appointment in the UK, we might be able to help with an interest free loan.
Costs of travel and moving house
We can also reimburse you and your family for travel costs and costs of moving house, depending on the role you are taking at the University.
Accommodation
Childcare
The University has its very own childcare centre, Bright Beginnings. You can also search the largest selection of childcare providers in the UK on Childcare.co.uk.
Schooling
The Get The Right School website has lots of tips on placing a foreign student in a UK school. If it’s an independent school you are looking for then a good resource is the Independent Schools Council.
Cost of living
If you’re budgeting, then the Office for National Statistics shopping prices comparison tool will give you an idea how much everyday items cost in the UK.
