English language requirements

If English is not your first language, you will need an English language qualification to study at Leeds.

The following are the minimum requirements for each level of study. Some of our courses have higher English language requirements; check your course page via Coursefinder for more information. 

Language Centre

If you don't meet these requirements, you could study a pre-sessional undergraduate or pre-sessional postgraduate course with our Language Centre to improve your English to the level required.

Undergraduate degrees

Minimum qualifications include:

  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) at 6.0 overall with no less than 5.5 in each component skill. Please note that we cannot accept results from these tests that are over two years old at the start date of the course you intend to study. We do not accept IELTS Indicator.
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-Based Test (TOEFL iBT) at 87 overall with no less than 20 in listening, 20 in reading, 22 in speaking and 21 in writing. Please note that the University of Leeds does not accept TOEFL MyBest scores and expects candidates to have met the relevant requirements from a single TOEFL test. We cannot accept results from these tests that are over two years old at the start date of the course you intend to study. We do not accept TOEFL iBT Home Edition.
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic at 60 overall with no less than 59 in any component. Please note that we cannot accept results from these tests that are over two years old at the start date of the course you intend to study.
  • Password Skills at 6.0 overall with no less than 5.5 in any component. 
  • Language Cert International English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) B2 Communicator (both the written and the spoken tests) with a High Pass overall and a Pass in each component. 
  • Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE), or C1 Advanced, at C/169 overall with no less than 162 in any component.
  • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE), or C2 Proficiency, at C/169 overall with no less than 162 in any component.
  • Trinity College London Integrated Skills in English (ISE) at a Pass in ISE II or above (if taken in the UK). Please note that we cannot accept results from these tests that are over two years old at the start date of the course you intend to study.
  • GCSE English Language at C/4; or Cambridge IGCSE English as a First or Second Language or Oxford AQA IGCSE English Language or English as a Second Language at C. GCSE English Literature may be considered in certain circumstances for some courses.
  • *During the covid-19 pandemic* for September 2021 entry, departments may accept an undergraduate degree studied in the UK for at least one year. Please note that we normally require an undergraduate degree to be studied in the UK for at least two years.
  • Overseas doctors who are registered with the NHS (please note that this may not apply for courses with higher requirements).
  • We might also accept an English language qualification from your country, which you can find among our admissions qualifications.

Masters degrees

Minimum qualifications include:

  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) at 6.5 overall with no less than 6.0 in each component skill. *During the covid-19 pandemic* for January 2021 entry, departments will accept IELTS scores achieved from one test where those scores are no more than two and a half (2.5) years old. Some departments may also consider accepting IELTS scores achieved across more than one test where one of those tests meets the UKVI minimum and those scores are no more than two years old. For entry from September 2021, we expect candidates to meet the relevant requirements from a single IELTS test and we cannot accept results from these tests that are over two years old at the start date of the course you intend to study. We do not accept IELTS Indicator.
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-Based Test (TOEFL iBT) at 92 overall with no less than 21 in listening, 21 in reading, 23 in speaking and 22 in writing. *During the covid-19 pandemic* for January 2021 entry, departments may accept TOEFL MyBest scores where those scores are no more than two years old and can be verified on the TOEFL iBT verification website. For entry from September 2021 we do not accept TOEFL MyBest scores and expect candidates to have met the relevant requirements from a single TOEFL test, and we cannot accept results from these tests that are over two years old at the start date of the course you intend to study. We do not accept TOEFL iBT Home Edition.
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic at 64 overall with no less than 60 in any component. Please note that we cannot accept results from these tests that are over two years old at the start date of the course you intend to study.
  • Password Skills (and Password Skills Solo during the covid-19 pandemic for January 2021 entry) at 6.5 overall with no less than 6.0 in any component. For entry from September 2021, Password Skills Solo is not accepted. 
  • Language Cert International English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) B2 Communicator (both the written and the spoken tests) with a High Pass overall and in each component. If the course asks for an equivalent to IELTS 7.0, the C1 Expert is required, with a Pass overall and in each component. 
  • Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE), or C1 Advanced, at C/176 overall with no less than 169 in any component.
  • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE), or C2 Proficiency, at C/176 overall with no less than 169 in any component.
  • Trinity College London Integrated Skills in English (ISE) at a Pass in ISE II or above (if taken in the UK). Please note that we cannot accept results from these tests that are over two years old at the start date of the course you intend to study.
  • GCSE English Language at C/4; or Cambridge IGCSE English as a First or Second Language or Oxford AQA IGCSE English Language or English as a Second Language at C. GCSE English Literature may be considered in certain circumstances for some courses.
