Access to Leeds student registration guide

All Access to Leeds students must register online for the Access to Leeds module. This is a step-by-step guide to help you with the registration process.

Module registration is not optional – if you don’t complete it, you will lose your place on the Access to Leeds programme.

Registration deadline

You should complete the registration process as soon as possible. The final date for completing your registration is 28th April 2022 unless you have been advised otherwise by the Access to Leeds team.

Important information before you start

Please follow the instructions in this guide carefully – the registration process is used for all our courses, but the Access to Leeds module has some special requirements.

All the information you provide should relate to your current circumstances. You will not need any information relating to your chosen degree or financial information. In particular, please remember:

  • You are registering for the Access to Leeds Module only, not your chosen degree course.
  • Use your current home address. Do not provide a University of Leeds accommodation address.
  • You will register separately for your chosen degree course in September, where you can update all details that have changed.

If you follow the step-by-step guide the process takes around 15 minutes on average.

If you need help with registration

If you need further help with registration, you can contact our Student Information Service Helpline Team Monday to Friday, 9 to 5 pm. You will need your Student ID number.

Before you start registration

You need to set up your University of Leeds IT account before you can register for the Access to Leeds module.

Register for an IT account

  1. Go to the My Password website.
  2. Under the heading New student? click Retrieve your username and password. This will take you to a new page. On this page, please ignore the first section of text about registration dates and skip straight to the next section called Find your password.
  3. Enter your University of Leeds student ID number, first name and date of birth and click Submit. You can find your student ID number at the top of the registration email from Access to Leeds. It begins with the digits 20. Do not use your UCAS ID here.
  4. On the next screen, read the conditions and click I Accept.
  5. Your username and password is then displayed – make a note of these.
  6. Click the Next button. You will then see information about Self Service Password Reset (SSPR) and will be prompted to set up SSPR and Duo Security two factor authentication. You will need to do this to be able to log in to University systems for the first time. They are part of the University’s digital security process. To do this, click on register for self service password reset (SSPR) and follow the instructions.
  7. Click Proceed to registration and follow the instructions.
  8. When you have done this, you can then change your password to something more memorable to you. Please make sure your new password is memorable and secure. Enter the username that you have just retrieved followed by @leeds.ac.uk (in the Old password box), and enter your new chosen password twice and click Submit. If you have any problems with these processes you can:
  9. Go to our Student Services website and log in using your username and new password.
  10. The registration pages will now be displayed and you will need to register onto the module – click on the Registration link.

From this point, module registration takes around 15 minutes on average and we recommend you do it in one go.

How to navigate between pages

There are navigation buttons at the bottom of each page (apart from the final Checklist page):

  • Continue – will save any changes and take you on to the next step
  • Checklist – will save any changes and take you back to the Checklist page
  • Cancel – will go back to the Checklist page without saving any changes.

The Help pages can be accessed by clicking on Help in the top right hand corner of each screen.

Registration checklist page

The process is split into seven steps with help pages at each step. All steps must be completed to finish the online registration. Click on a checklist item to confirm/update information. Once you have entered a page of the checklist, use the navigation buttons to go through each step in sequence.

Step 1 - Personal details

  • Check the information on this page is correct and make any necessary amendments.
  • You only need to enter your details in the boxes on the right if the information on the left is incorrect.
  • Ignore the Electoral registration section, do not enter any details here.
  • Ignore Are you a parent or carer? section, do not tick this box.
  • When you have finished, click Continue.

Step 2 - Personal Details

  • Complete the monitoring information. Mandatory fields must be completed, and are marked with an asterisk (*).
  • Select No in the Student Union membership section as you cannot access any student societies at present. You will be able to join this later as a first year undergraduate.
  • When you have finished, click Continue.

Step 3 - Addresses, telephone numbers and emergency contact details

  • There are three address types that require checking: home, term-time and emergency contact.
  • Each address type is displayed on separate pages with the requirement to update (if necessary) and confirm the address.
  • Home and term-time addresses will be the same for you at this time - it relates to your current and not future living situation.
  • Your home address as provided from UCAS should already be populated in the home address screen. If your address isn’t already populated, you can search for your postcode and click Find UK address. Choose the correct address from the drop down menu and click Accept address.
  • Tick the boxes - If you ticked the two boxes at the bottom of the Home address screen, your term-time address should be populated for you. Your term-time address will be the same as your home address – do not enter any details of University accommodation. You can update this in September if you register as a full time student.
  • There should be only one telephone number in the Phone numbers section – leave the second box blank and make sure the dropdown box still says Please select
  • You should enter the first and last name of your emergency contact, and their relationship to you. Please only enter one telephone number – leave the second box in the Telephone numbers section blank and make sure the dropdown box still says Please select.
  • Don’t worry too much about who you put as an emergency contact or if they have a different address – we won’t need to use these details during the Access to Leeds module and you will have the opportunity to update them when you register for your degree in September. If you ticked the two boxes at the bottom of the home address screen, your emergency contact address should be populated for you.

Contact details summary page

After all three address types have been confirmed, you will be presented with a summary of the information.

  • Check all the addresses are accurate and correct.
  • Tick the box and click Continue.

Step 4 - Sports membership

  • As you cannot access the Edge Sports Centre as a student until you are registered on your degree, you should tick the I do not wish to buy... option and click Continue
  • You can still get gym membership as a first year student if you tick no now.

Step 5 – Programme of study details

  • The page will state that your programme of study is Access to Leeds, not the degree for which you have applied. This is correct and you do not need to change anything.
  • Tick the box at the bottom of the page and click Continue.
  • Your Registration status will be displayed as Eligible to register until you have successfully completed the full registration process, at which point this will be updated to Registered on your student record.

Step 6 - Fee payment arrangements

  • You do not have to pay any fees to complete the Access to Leeds module. The tuition fee amount displayed at the top of the page should be £0.00. You do not need to add / change anything.
  • Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Continue.

Step 7 - Declaration statement

  • Your details will be displayed – please read the declaration and privacy notice and tick the box.
  • Click Save and continue to the next step.

Final confirmation (registration certificate) page

  • The print registration certificate button will open the standard print process: once you have reached the end, you will have the option to print or view your registration certificate – this is not necessary, but it is proof that you have successfully completed the registration process so you don’t need to contact us to check.
  • You can ignore any additional information displayed on this page.

What happens next?

Once you complete the registration process, your participation on the Access to Leeds programme is added to your University of Leeds student record (your student record was first created when you applied via UCAS). This means that University staff and our IT team can give you access to the Access to Leeds Module.

If you start as a new student at Leeds in September, you will complete a new registration then, where you will register onto your degree course.

Once registered, you can begin work on the Study Skills section of the Access to Leeds Module. We will email you separate instructions for this.
