Membership for the Bragg Centre for Materials Research is free and open to anyone from across the materials research community.

We welcome applications from postgraduate researchers, academics, research technical professionals, and those working in the field of materials science. We also welcome applications from those with a connection to or interest in materials research.

As a member, the Bragg Centre will give you the opportunity to:

  • Build your professional profile and be associated with an internationally-renowned materials research centre.
  • Network, collaborate and socialise with materials researchers from all faculties involved in the Centre.
  • Access the Bragg Centre’s network, spanning business, government and academia.
  • Be invited to Centre events – meetings, seminars, workshops and conferences.
  • Receive updates about recent publications, funding and employment opportunities.
  • Enhance your personal development through training, knowledge and skills sharing.

Members who work or study at the University of Leeds will also be able to:

  • Contribute to setting the strategic direction of the Bragg Centre for the benefit of its members. This includes involvement in decisions on future support infrastructure, equipment and facilities.
  • Have access to dedicated Bragg Centre research and innovation support, as well as communications support to promote and translate research to fellow academics and stakeholders.
  • Apply for Bragg funding for interdisciplinary PhDs and other research projects and related activities.

Applying for membership

When you apply, you will need to demonstrate how your work aligns with our research themes. You can choose more than one theme when you submit your application.

If you are not completing research on these themes but would like to receive updates on news and events, please select ‘none’ in the research themes section (question 13) of the membership application form.

Research themes

  • Materials characterisation – the investigation of material structures, including pioneering new techniques in microscopy, analysis and testing. 
  • Bionanotechnology – engineering biological systems for healthcare, sensing, and regenerative medicine. 
  • Electronic and photonic materials – developing materials for future electronics, energy systems, and quantum technologies. 
  • Functional surfaces – creating coatings and treatments for extreme environments and medical applications. 
  • Multiscale materials – designing materials from nano to macroscale for industrial deployment. 
  • Soft matter – innovating with polymers, synthetic proteins, and liquid crystals for sustainable and adaptable solutions. 

Terms and conditions

  • Your application will be reviewed by the Bragg Centre team.
  • You can leave the Bragg Centre community at any time.
  • If you leave the University or your email address changes, you will no longer be a Bragg Centre member.
  • You should notify the Centre team of any changes to your personal details and contact information. Email the Bragg Centre team at braggcentre@leeds.ac.uk.
