Masters pre-sessional English  Academic year courses

We offer Masters pre-sessional English courses throughout the academic year, starting in September, October and January. 

With our courses, you’ll be able to:

  • learn the academic English you’ll need to study at postgraduate level
  • get to know other Masters students and build a community of peers
  • become familiar with University facilities such as libraries, study spaces and learning platforms, and settle into life in Leeds.

The course you need depends on your current level of English and the level required for your degree, which you can find under ‘entry requirements’ on your Masters course page.

Courses and entry requirements for 2026/27

Choose from the following options depending on the requirements of your course and your IELTS score.

If you have an English qualification that isn’t IELTS (International English Language Testing System), see the entry requirements for other English qualifications we accept.

Your course requires an overall IELTS score of 6.0

Your current score is 4.0 (with no component below 4.0)

You need:

Your current score is 4.5 (with no components below 4.5)

Your current score is 5.0 (with no components below 4.5)

Your current score is 5.0 (with no components below 5.0)

Your current score is 5.5 (with no components below 5.5)

You need:

Your course requires an overall IELTS score of 6.5, with no less than 6.0  in each component

Your current score is 4.5 (with no components below 4.0)

You need:

Your current score is 5.0 (with no components below 5.0)

Your current score is 5.5 (with no components below 5.5)
