Should I study a pre-sessional online or on-campus?

Online pre-sessionals

If you choose our online summer pre-sessionals:

  • You can study online from anywhere in the world.
  • You’ll learn through live online classes and seminar discussions, as well as dedicated time with your tutor.
  • If you need a visa to study your degree course, you’ll need to apply for a visa and arrive in the UK by the start of your degree.
  • You will not be eligible for a combined CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies). If you haven’t already met the English language requirements of your postgraduate or undergraduate course, you’ll need to pass the pre-sessional course to meet the English language condition of your degree offer.
  • Undergraduate applicants and postgraduate applicants will study the same course.
  • Entry requirements for our online summer pre-sessionals are the same as our on-campus summer pre-sessionals.

On-campus pre-sessionals

If you choose our on-campus summer pre-sessionals:

  • Study on the University of Leeds campus – get to know the University, the city and the region.
  • You may be eligible for a combined CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) that includes your pre-sessional English and your Masters course so that you only need to apply for one visa. Read more on our six and 10 week summer courses page.
  • Your pre-sessional course will be tailored to your level of study: undergraduate, Masters or research.
  • If you’ll be studying a Masters, your pre-sessional will be tailored to your subject area, so you'll learn academic English that specifically prepares you for your degree.
  • Learn through classes, including seminars and lectures on campus. You’ll have dedicated time with your tutor, and face-to-face learning will be complemented and supported by a variety of digital technologies.
  • Entry requirements for our online summer pre-sessionals are the same as our on-campus summer pre-sessionals.

Frequently asked questions

Can I hold an offer for both online and on-campus pre-sessional courses?

You can only hold an offer for one pre-sessional and any changes are at the discretion of the Language Centre. You cannot hold an offer for both the on-campus and online pre-sessionals.

Please make sure you thoroughly read the course information, and you have made a decision whether to study on-campus or online before you submit your application. Please note the deadlines for submitting your application (there are specific deadlines for online and on-campus courses).

I hold an offer for an on-campus pre-sessional, can I switch to study online?

Once you hold an offer for a pre-sessional course, you are not able to switch unless it is approved by the Language Centre. You can make a request to switch, but it is not guaranteed that your request will be approved.

We strongly recommend that you read the course information thoroughly, so that you understand the differences between the online and on-campus courses. If you do wish to make a request, please raise an enquiry on the portal.

What are the admissions deadlines for the online pre-sessionals?

10 week online pre-sessional course

  • Deadline to apply: 29 May 2022

I can’t see the online summer pre-sessional in the list of courses available on the application portal, how can I apply for this course?

If you have not yet applied for a summer pre-sessional, please make an application for the generic 10 or 6 week summer pre-sessional which you’ll find in the list on the portal. Our admissions team will review your application and contact you via the portal to advise you about the online pre-sessional.

If I study the pre-sessional online can I study my degree online too?

No, you’ll need to make travel arrangements to come to Leeds to attend your Masters programme in 2022/23. Read about teaching and learning in 2022/23.

If I study the pre-sessional online, when will I receive my degree programme CAS?

Your CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) will be processed after successful completion of your pre-sessional course is confirmed. This will be after the end date of your pre-sessional course.

Which English language qualifications do you accept for the online pre-sessional?

The Language Centre accepts the same English language certificates for entry to the online summer pre-sessional courses as those we accept for the on-campus pre-sessional courses.

I have already paid the fees of the on-campus pre-sessional but now I have switched to the online course, do I need to pay the fees again?

No, you do not need to pay the pre-sessional fees again if you have already paid. The fees you’ve paid for the on-campus pre-sessional will be transferred automatically to your online course.
