Our partnership with The Alan Turing Institute

The University of Leeds is a partner of The Alan Turing Institute, the UK’s national institute for data science and artificial intelligence.

The University and the Turing have a shared commitment to make great leaps in data science research in order to change the world for the better. The Turing has strategic research programmes in areas such as artificial intelligence, health and public policy.

An important research area for the Turing is urban analytics, which will be led by Leeds Institute for Data Analytics (LIDA) director and Turing Fellow, Professor Mark Birkin.

Leeds joins 12 other universities as part of the Turing network. The institute’s university collaborations mean research can be applied to real-world problems with lasting effects.

Turing Fellows

At the heart of our partnership will be the University’s 24 Turing Fellows. The fellowships are awarded for proven research excellence in data science, artificial intelligence or a related field. Six of our fellows are leading projects funded through the Turing.

LIDA will be heavily involved in coordinating projects and activity among the Turing Fellows and their research teams.

Our fellows include experts in:

  • urban analytics
  • medical bioinformatics
  • immersive technologies
  • criminology and cyber crime
  • mathematical and statistical methods

I am confident that The Alan Turing Institute will benefit from LIDA's interdisciplinary approach and the fantastic engagement we have achieved with national partners across the retail, energy, transport and healthcare sectors.

Urban analytics

The Turing’s urban analytics programme aims to apply mathematical models to better understand the science of cities, and includes prediction or urban conflict, terrorism and riots, urban economic trade projections, and urban planning.

New data from 'smart cities' is providing transformative insights all over the world.
