Please see the Leeds University Business School website for the course list, typical entry requirements, and accepted qualifications. Exceptions to the typical academic requirements may be made when an applicant demonstrates significant relevant experience and their potential for benefiting from the course is clear.

Advanced Entry

Leeds University Business School does not accept applications from those who are seeking advanced entry on postgraduate courses. All applications must be made for the full programme of study.

Application process

Application routes and deadlines

All applicants for taught postgraduate courses should apply online. If an application deadline is in place, this will be stated on Coursefinder and the completed application must be submitted by this date. Please refer to the Staged Admissions section for process and deadlines.

Confirmation

Evidence that all conditions have been met must be uploaded to the applicant portal by 23:59 (UK time) on Monday 9 August 2021.

Deferral requests

Applicants who wish to defer an offer of a place to the following academic year should make the request via the Applicant Portal by 1 April 2022, where the course has a September or October start date. Only applicants with an unconditional offer, or who have an offer conditional on English language, can defer. Deferral of a place to study is at the discretion of the Business School and is strictly limited to a maximum of one academic year following the year of initial application.

Applicants who request deferral for more than one academic year will be required to reapply. Such candidates should be aware that no guarantee can be given that another offer will be made and that the conditions of any future offer may differ to those of the original.

Applicant assessment

Academic grades normally form only one part of the final decision and the following sections give examples of how applicants may demonstrate that they have the skills, knowledge and attributes that we consider will enable them to become successful students on our degree courses.

Please note, the application forms of those who are unsuccessful in gaining a place on their chosen course may be passed to admissions teams for other courses in which the applicant may be interested.

Personal statements

For all Masters programmes at Leeds University Business School, the personal statement is an important part of the assessment process and therefore must be included as part of your application. An applicant may be assessed based on the strength of their statement relative to others in their cohort, and/or based on criteria set by the academic school.

In the statement, we are looking for evidence of the qualities that you will bring to the programme and student community. We also want to understand how studying a programme at Leeds University Business School will help you meet your career aspirations. Please ensure that you address the following in your personal statement:

  • What skills, qualities and experiences would you bring to the programme and how will they help you succeed?
  • How will the opportunity to study at Leeds University Business School help you in your academic, personal and professional development?
  • What are your career aspirations and how will successful completion of this programme help you achieve them?

Your personal statement should be no more than 500 words in length, be written in English and be your own work.

The University uses a system to process personal statements received in support of an application in order to identify statements that show similarity. Where these applications are identified by the system, whether you are given the opportunity to submit a new proposal is at the discretion of the School.

Interviews

Except for the Leeds MBA, interviews do not form part of Leeds University Business School’s standard admissions process. However, in some cases, an applicant may be invited for an interview if it will help inform whether or not an offer should be made.

The Leeds MBA

If invited to interview, the applicant will receive an invitation via the applicant portal from the school to attend an interview with a choice of dates and times. We will do our best to accommodate requests for alternative dates but this cannot be guaranteed. Interviews methods may vary depending on the circumstances and/or geographical location of the applicant. For example, interviews may take place on a one to one basis or via Skype, video conferencing or telephone.

Staged admissions

Due to the high demand for places at Leeds University Business School, we operate a competitive, staged admissions process in which applicants are compared against their peers. Selection is based on both an applicant’s academic record and non-academic record, as evidenced in the personal statement and curriculum vitae. This means that it is very important that all required documents are provided at the point of application.

Due to the competition for places, preference will be given to applicants with achieved or prospective grades above our minimum entry requirements. Given the high level of competition for available places, many good quality applicants may be unsuccessful.

Offers to outstanding applicants will be made on an ongoing basis, whilst the majority of applications will be held until the stated selection date for their stage when a proportion of the places available through the competitive process explained above will be allocated to applicants. Where there is a high volume of applications and strong competition for places it may be necessary to roll your application forward to the next stage decision deadline date. Applicants who are not made an offer by the relevant stage decision deadline date will be notified that their application has been unsuccessful, or that it will be carried forward to the next stage decision deadline date for further consideration.

In some cases, where an application is unsuccessful for the initial choice of course, but the application is of good quality and there is evidence of a good fit to another course at Leeds University Business School, an alternative course may be offered.

International students requiring a Student visa are particularly advised to submit applications as early as possible to ensure they have sufficient time to obtain a visa and prepare for arrival in the UK.

Furthermore, an offer of a place is needed for many of the scholarships available to international students and scholarship application closing dates can often be early in the year. For further details please visit our How to apply page.

Other assessment methods

In exceptional circumstances we may consider applicants who do not meet the requirement of a 2.1 or equivalent bachelor’s degree on the basis of relevant work experience and the academic potential to benefit from taught postgraduate study. This will be assessed by consideration of the CV and personal statement and may include an interview.

Decisions and communications with applicants

Please refer to the University of Leeds Taught Admissions Policy for information on how decisions will be communicated by the University.

Unsuccessful applicants who wish to request feedback on the reason for the outcome of their application should do so in line with the Feedback section of the above policy, using the relevant email address contact in the Useful contacts and resources section. Generally, where applicants request feedback on why they have not been admitted, feedback will be given. However, please note that initial feedback is given as standard to all unsuccessful candidates who apply via the Applicant Portal.

Appeals and complaints

As per the University of Leeds Taught Admissions Policy, applicants who have sought feedback and wish to challenge the decision made on their application should contact the Faculty Admissions Manager, whose details can be found in the Useful contacts and resources section.
