Leeds has a well-deserved reputation for being great for shopping, as it has everything from big name designer labels to independent boutiques.

You can find all the leading high street shops on Briggate, a pedestrianised street in the town centre. The city also has a variety of shopping centres selling everything from budget fashion to fairtrade jewellery.

Victoria Quarter is a stylish shopping arcade and where you'll find names such as Louis Vuitton, Paul Smith and Vivienne Westwood. It is also home to Harvey Nichols which has become a must-visit destination in the city centre selling top designer labels.

Located on Vicar Lane, Kirkgate market is the largest covered market in Europe. Its 800 stalls sell all kinds of foods. The Marks & Spencer's chain was founded in this magnificent Edwardian building in the late 19th century when it started operating there as a penny bazaar. A farmer's market is held here every month selling seasonal fruit and vegetables and other fresh produce.

Leeds is a great place to support and take part in all kinds of sport.

Top sports teams

Headlingley Carniegie Stadium is home to Leeds Rhinos, one of the big players in the world of rugby league and 2005 and 2008 World Club Champions. One of the original founder clubs of the game, they have won the Championship six times and the Challenge Cup 11 times.

Since 1891 Headingley Carnegie Cricket Ground has been home to Yorkshire County Cricket Club one of the biggest names in the game. The grounds play host to international and Twenty20 cricket

Leeds United Football Club is based at Elland Road football stadium. They are one of the longest established teams in the country and have an illustrious history of great wins and dramatic comebacks.
