Working with global organisationsOur academics are in high demand across the world
We like to share our research with partners and broaden our own knowledge by working with others. Our research draws on collaborations with prestigious academic institutions while adding value to companies around the globe.
Entrepreneurial activity is a big part of the University's strategy, so our academics are in high demand across the world. 40% of our academic staff actively work in applied research or as consultants to industry, many with global corporations including Tesco, BP, GlaxoSmithKline and Astra Zeneca. This real-world experience helps our academics to sharpen their skills while bringing in funding valued at £39m in 2008.
Sometimes we find that demand is so high for specific research that we start our own company to market it. Through a range of spin-out companies such as Syntopix, Tracsis and Tissue Regenix we can commercialise our research directly.

The Plant Stress Initiative led by us and Pennsylvania State University provides a unified framework for leading plant scientists, biotechnologists, geneticists and ecologists to tackle the challenges of food security and climate change.
We are instrumental in the ground-breaking White Rose Health Innovation Partnership (WRHIP) that allows UK and American universities to work with hospitals and businesses to fast-track new healthcare technologies.
WRHIP has received international acclaim and received the prestigious USA Edison Award in 2008.
We are also establishing collaborative research in the field of nanotechnology and a range of other initiatives with King Saud University in Saudi Arabia.
